Permanent Storage

Solution:

Underground CO₂ sequestration in sedimentary formations is the most mature technique for storage of CO₂ captured from point sources. Size CO₂ injection projects are already operating today and researching ways to reduce the cost of the technology in the years to come.

IMPACT:

Storage of a total of 125 gigatons of carbon dioxide would result in a capital input of approximately 1–4 trillion dollars in total and 10–50 billion dollars per year until 2100. For comparison, the total cost of the energy transition required for <1.5°C of warming was estimated to be 1.6–3.8 trillion dollars per year until 2050. Source: Frontiers.
